Yesterday Ashley and I had our first Andes ski trip, a beautiful day in Valle Nevado, only 35 km from our apartment in downtown Santiago. The mountain is from 3300 to 3900m of altitude so you are above the treeline the moment you slap on the skis. We found the conditions to be pretty good, despite the fact that the Andes have only received about half as much snow as they normally do. The crowds were virtually nonexistent as well, allowing us to pack a lot of runs in over a short period. What the guidebooks don’t emphasize enough is the crazy road to get there: 39 switchbacks and barely wide enough for two vehicles. Definitely not fun after a long day of skiing and as the sun is going down!
